Farmance prefers to source Local and/or Certified Organic produce. A vast majority of small, local farms are not certified organic, but they practice sustainable, organic, regenerative farming practices. Farmance and/or it’s trusted distributors visit those farms and meet the farmers to ensure that they follow sustainable farming, land use and natural resource utilization practices.
For farms that are not local, Farmance prefers to source certified organic produce only. Occasionally there are items that cannot be sourced from certified organic farms or are of poor quality, so we will have conventional versions.
In terms of packaging, most of the items it receives directly from local farmers are in reusable commercial plastic containers that are reused hundreds of times.
Due to a combination of the perishable nature of produce items as well as deeply established practices in the produce industry, a lot of the items Farmance sources from larger/national distributors are received are in single use cardboard boxes, with some items such as greens packaged in large plastic bags to maintain freshness. Farmance reuses some of those boxes when it can, sends them back to distributors if they will accept them, otherwise diligently recycles them through professional commercial recycling services.
